Rain aims higher for world stardom

Korean pop superstar Rain, known as "Bi" in Korean, held a successful first concert of his world tour in Las Vegas, the United States at 8 p.m., Las Vegas time, on Saturday (Dec. 24).

The 24-year-old K-pop star took the stage at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, aiming to make inroads into the North American market.

It was the largest concert ever given by a Korean artist and his second outing in the U.S., following two sold-out concerts in the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City last February.

Rain has expanded his fan base from New York in the east to Las Vegas in the west only 10 months after his debut on the U.S. stage.

He was also named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World this year.

About 3,800 fans packed the venue where world-class artist Celine Dion is a resident performer and where Elton John and Gloria Estefan have also given concerts.

About 90 percent of the audiences were Asian fans from Japan, China, Singapore and Taiwan.

At the concert, titled "Rain's Coming", he successfully hosted the two-hour concert in English featuring 21 songs with stunning dance sequences.

"I exist because of your support. My dream has come true", he said in gratitude to a fervent response from his fans.

"I am very proud of Rain who stood up on the stage where world-class pop stars are used to performing", Moon Ji-hyun, 24, who saw the show, said.

The ticket price costing $98-$288 was high, but the concert was sold out just one week after ticket sales opened.

Stage direction was by Jaime King renowned for Madonna's recent "Confessions Tour", and Christina Aguilera's choreography, working with lighting specialist Roy Bennett, and visual director Dago Gonzalez.

Park Jin-young, producer of Rain's music and CEO of the JYP Entertainment, and Lil Jon, producer of "Yeah" sung by Usher attended the concert.

Rain is receiving acclaim as an international celebrity as his first movie "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" directed by Park Chan-wook, was invited to the Berlin International Film Festival in the competitions section.

He had been invited to sing at the opening ceremony of the 2006 Doha Asian Games in Qatar, but his tight schedule prevented him from attending.

His world tour will span 35 cities in 12 countries, including Hong Kong Jan. 12-13, Singapore Jan. 21, Malaysia Jan. 27, Thailand Feb. 3, Vietnam March 10-11 and Taiwan, China, Japan, the U.S. and Canada afterwards.

StarM, the entertainment agency organizing the concert, is in charge of coordinating with travel agencies from different countries to make it easier for fans to watch the show.

'Cyborg' Gets Invited to Berlinale

By Seo Dong-shin
Staff Reporter

Park Chan-wook's "I'm a Cyborg, But That's Okay" will be screened at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival's Competition section, eyeing for the Bears, the festival’s main prizes.

Dieter Kosslick, director of the prestigious European film festival, recently sent an official invitation for the offbeat romantic comedy film, according to All That Cinema, a public relations company for films in Seoul.

Director Park will likely visit the German capital during the festival in February along with actor Jung Ji-hoon, also known as singer Rain, and actress Lim Soo-jung, who starred in the film.

A scene from "I'm a Cyborg, But That's Okay" shows
Lim Soo-jung, left, and singer Rain, who also goes by his real name Jung Ji-hoon.

It is the second invitation for Park, who enjoys wide popularity among non-Korean audiences as well as domestic fans for his hardcore films such as "Old Boy." His 2000 film "Joint Security Area" was also invited to the Competition of the Berlinale, although it did not score any of the Bear Awards traditionally handed out at the festival.

"Cyborg’" revolves around a young female Yonggun (played by Lim), who believes she is a cyborg and is hospitalized in a psychiatric ward, and a young man named Il-soon (played by Rain) who chases after her.

The star director and cast caused a lot of media attention since the making of the film. But after a nationwide release on Dec. 7, only some 780,000 people have watched the movie at theaters as of Dec. 20. CJ Entertainment, which distributed the film, plans to close the screening around next week.

Park Chan-wook's new movie 'Cyborg' fails to appeal at box office

SEOUL, Dec. 21 (Yonhap) -- Acclaimed South Korean director Park Chan-wook's new movie will be pulled from most local screens before the lucrative Christmas holiday due to disappointing box office results in its first two weeks, its distributor said Thursday.

The romantic comedy "I'm a Cyborg But That's Okay" has so far drawn only 780,000 viewers, a marked disappointment for the internationally-renowned director whose previous works topped well over 3 million. The film will be removed from about 280 screens nationwide and on most screens will be replaced by "The Restless," a martial arts epic set to be released this evening, CJ Entertainment said.

"Cyborg" had drawn international attention with the combination of a director who received the Grand Prize at Cannes in 2004 with "Old Boy" and Asian heartthrob Rain as its lead.

"Usually, when we have an audience rating like this so far, it certainly won't pass one million," CJ Entertainment publicist Kim Yun-jeong said. "And there are many new movies being released this week." CJ distributes both "Cyborg" and "The Restless."

Park himself said the film was the "kindest" movie he has ever produced, with the star casting and simple plot. Set in a psychiatric ward, it tells the story of two patients -- a girl who believes she is a cyborg and a boy who falls in love with her.

Critics praised his experimental storytelling and stylish presentation, but audiences considered it too abstract and unapproachable to follow. In light of Park's fame, "Cyborg" topped box office charts for the first weekend, but it was now not even among the top 10 on Internet reservation sites. Hollywood blockbuster "Night at the Museum" led the box office chart, followed by "Holiday" and Korean epic "The Restless" according to Interpark.com.

Singers-Turned-Actors: the Best and the Worst

Rain, Kim Chang-wan, Kim Dong-wan, Im Chang-jeong and Eric Moon
Jeong Ryeo-won, Uhm Jung-hwa, Eugene (Yoo Jin), Seong Yoo-ri and Lee Hyo-lee

In Korea, singers don't just sing to make a living any more. They try hard to map out a career cycle as entertainers, with the arch usually taking them into acting ventures of varying success. In soap operas particularly, some acquit themselves well. Others, however, provoke derision from Korea's merciless Netizens for the way they flounce and pout around the sets.

In fact, the majority of soap leads are played by singers today. The Chosun Ilbo asked 14 writers and producers of hit dramas who the best and worst of the bunch are. We asked them to rank the top three in each category by giving three points to the best, two to the second best and one to the third.

Among men, famously ambitious Rain came top with a score of 29 for appearances in "Full House" and "A Love to Kill". Praise was fulsome. "He successfully appeals to the public with his ability to express feelings in a sympathetic way and by making the transition from singer to actor very naturally", one panel member enthused. "He's a jewel. It would have been such a loss if he hadn't decided to act". In second was Kim Chang-wan with 13 points, followed by Kim Dong-wan with 10 points and Im Chang-jeong with 9. Mun Jeong-hyeok or Eric Moon, who landed in fifth with 8 points, got mixed reviews. Some said he was "taking full advantage of his pretty face and ability as an entertainer". Others were less kind.

Among women, Jeong Ryeo-won came top thanks to her part in "My Name is Kim Sam-soon". Jeong "is able to reflect her own natural image into the role she plays in the drama", one panelist said. "She works hard at learning her craft. If you look closely at her eye movement, tempo, breathing and reactions to her partners, you can see that she studies the script really hard". Uhm Jung-hwa came second with 17 points and Eugene (Yoo Jin) in third with 12. Uhm is said to be able to play a wide range of parts, have a lively spirit as an actress and act very naturally. Eugene drew favorable responses thanks to her fluent dialect in the drama "Really Really Like You" broadcast this year. She was praised for speaking dialect very well, which is not easy at all.

Overall, Rain came top with 27 points, followed by Uhm Jung-hwa with 14, Jeong Ryeo-won with 12, and Im Chang-jeong with 11.

Who, then, is the worst singer-turned-actor? Seong Yoo-ri held the sorry title with 21 points, followed by Lee Hyo-lee with 14, Park Jeong-ah with 13, Kang Ta with 8, and Eric Moon again with 5. Seong, our panelists said delicately, "has starred in several dramas but still has a long way to go". Lee Hyo-lee, who was featured in the drama "Three Leafed Clover", was denounced as woefully miscast. The glamour girl "did not suit the character of a factory worker", they said. In Park's case, the difference between the singer's image and her soap character was also judged too glaring.

WHO'S THE RICHEST KOREAN STAR THIS YEAR ?

The text on the picture : "who is the richest, BoA, Bae Yong Jun, or Rain?"

For some people, being a celebrity is a dream. The reason is, they must be famous yet rich. Celebrities usually have high income. Especially if they mastered many field at once. Then, approximately who's the celebrity with highest income this year?

Young, beautiful, talented, famous and pretty, that's how BoA has been known. All because her success in the music world that has been her path since she's 11 years old, now a Singapore media claimed that she's the highest income-Korean celebrity. BoA recieved more than 40 million US dollars from the sales of her albums concerts, and adverts/commercials. That number passed the income of the King of Hallyu, Bae Yong Jun, which is less than 10 million US dolalrs. Even the value of Lee Hyori's contract with Samsung is 9 billion Won only. Whereas, Lee Hyori's management, M-Net Media, said that its the most expensive value for the contract for one year span. "This is the third year Lee Hyori is doing a contract with Samsung, and Hyori has just extended the most expensive contract for one year with Samsung Electronic," they said. Beside from those two celebrities' income, BoA's income is also said to be higher compared to a few famous celebrities such as Rain, Jang Dong Gun, Eric Mun, and Kim Hee Seon.

But many people doubt that BoA can reach that fantastic number. "Its hard to believe, I know she's very rich. But the number of 40 million US dollars is just too much. Whereas, her songs this year didn't do so good, Even her latest album, OUTGROW, although in the first week it reached the top position in the Oricon Charts, but it couldn't hold out in the next weeks. The Singapore Media which released that issue clarify, "We got the data based on the income in the entertainment world. If its sum upped from the whole income, of course Bae Yong Jun from the entertainment world and business at the same time, the most favourtied actor in Japan, can't be beaten. Especially, Bae Yong Jun is the investor in a few company. The value of the investation? It reached 110 billion won or equal to 119 million US dollars !!

Not only the income of Bae Yong Jun that estimated cannot be compared to BoA's. Celebrity that got the attention from America in the past one year, Rain, said to be more suitable to be said as the highest income celebrity. The organizer of Rain world tour, Star M, said that they can get hundreds million dollars from the concert that will be started at the end of this year. "This world tour will note the income estimated about 106 billion won or 113 million US dollars. We estimated 56 billion won (59 million US dollars) is the result of the ticket sales, and the rest is the result of the sales of DVD and merchandise, than the others," they said. That's not including the income from movies, albums and adverts/commercials. So, its reasonable that Rain will get the title of the highest income-Korean celebritiy.

Hear: Why does it always rain on me?

Reviews by Chow Ee-Tan and Max Koh

ETERNAL RAIN
Rain (King Records)

Korean pop sensation Rain, who has conquered Asia by storm and has released three K-Pop albums, has come out with his first J-Pop album to add to his dominance in the Japanese market.

In this album, the 24-year-old hunk, known in Korea as Bi (which translate as rain) and whose real name is Jung Ji Hoon, offers music across genres from fast and groovy hip-hop and dance tracks to more sensual R&B numbers.

Fast tracks are the order of the day including tracks like Free Way (track 1) which also comes in a remix version (track 12), Baby Baby (track 5), and Rain’s collaboration with Japan’s emerging hip-hop diva Al in Oh Yeah (track 2).

Meanwhile, Sad Tango (which also has an English version) is a Latin-influenced number that will also puts one in the dance mood.

Rain’s vocals have shown considerable improvement in control and technique, and he exuberates expressions and feelings while interpreting love songs.

His clear diction is commendable, even when singing the English number.

Fans would be glad to know the album comes with a VCD that features a special recording of his two concerts in Japan as well as exclusive behind-the-scene and interview footage. — CE

South Korean pop star Rain debuts as robot lover

Yahoo and Reuters covering Rain's Cyborg debut:

By Jon Herskovitz
Thu Dec 14, 9:00 PM ET

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean pop star Rain, who has made women swoon from Seoul to Singapore, is aiming to prove his talent on the silver screen with a movie debut.

Rain, 24, the song and dance sensation who has taken Asia by storm and landed on Time magazine's list of the world's 100 most influential people, stars in the quirky comedy called "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK," which opened this week in South Korea.

The man who has sold millions of records across Asia, and performed in sold-out concerts at New York's Madison Garden, has traded his trademark trendy clothing for an awkward hospital gown in the film, where he plays a patient at a psychiatric ward alongside a character who thinks she is a robot.

"The main actress and myself spend a lot of time feeling rather disoriented," Rain, also known as Jeong Ji-hoon, told reporters earlier this week.

"The movie was a nice change of pace for me."

Rain's character tries to steal the identities of other patients at the hospital. The supposed cyborg played by actress Lim Soo-jung ends up stealing his heart.

The movie is directed by Park Chan-wook, whose film "Oldboy" won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004.

Park, known for his intricate story lines and dark humor was looking for lighter fare after completing his last movie "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance," which tells of a woman wrongly imprisoned, who once freed, seeks devastating revenge.

FILM FRIENDLY?

But some of the world's top music talents have a hard time dealing with celluloid. Critics bashed Britney Spears for her role in the flop "Crossroads" and Mariah Carey was about as sparkling as coal in her film "Glitter."

Rain, who glides and gyrates smoothly on the dance floor, said he often fumbled on the movie set.

"It was difficult delivering my lines while I was acting and finding the right time to take a breath," he said.

This isn't the first time Rain faces the camera. He has appeared -- perfectly at ease -- in three TV series in South Korea and is one of the country's top pitchmen in TV ads.

Although little known outside of Asia, Rain is a pop sensation at home and in major regional markets including Japan, China and Taiwan, where fans can't get enough of his dance-infused pop tunes.

Rain's fourth album came out earlier this year and he will embark on one of the largest tours for an Asian pop star this month. He will play in about a dozen countries over the next six months and his promoters expect ticket sales to total 100 billion won ($108.7 million).

A few Asian music stars have made inroads in international markets such as the United States but Rain believes the day will come when an artist from Asia will be as popular as Britney and Mariah are in around the world.

Rain sold out New York's Madison Square Garden for a show in February 2006.

"The U.S. market will start to love Asian artists as time goes by," he said.

'I'm a Cyborg But That's OK' and 'Seducing Mr. Perfect'

Time to check on what's new at movie theaters nationwide.

The big releases this week are three romantic comedies from Korea and the US.

First up is director Park Chan-wook's latest production, his first since COMPLETING his revenge trilogy.

Here's Son Heekyung.

"I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" is director Park Chan-wook's first film after completing his revenge trilogy.

The romantic comedy stars superstar singer Rain in his motion picture debut.
Rain plays a mental patient who believes he can steal other people's characteristics.

Actress Lim Soojung plays a female patient who says she's a cyborg. The movie explores the alternate vision of reality that the two patients have. The director says he wanted to get away from themes such as revenge and hatred, and get more experimental.

Also making his silver screen debut in a romantic comedy is model Daniel Henney.

"Seducing Mr. Perfect" has Henney starring alongside actress-singer Um Jung-hwa.

The story revolves around a female office employee who keeps getting dumped by her boyfriends.

She seeks love advice from her smart and sexy boss. He offers a challenge: he asks her to seduce HIM.

From Hollywood comes "Just Friends", a retelling of the ugly duckling story about an overweight high school student. He gets humiliated when he expresses his love for his best friend at a graduation party. But things change years later as he develops into a handsome record producer in Hollywood.

A plane accident takes him back to his hometown, where he faces his unresolved feelings for his friend.

The remastered 3-D version of the animated feature "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is also out.

The feature is loosely based on drawings and a poem by director Tim Burton.

Singer Rain Named Goodwill Envoy for Korean Tourism

Korean pop star Rain will serve as a goodwill ambassador to promote the country's tourism industry in 2007.

The Korea Tourism Organization has appointed Rain, better known as Bi in Korea, to help spread Korean pop culture, tourist spots and restaurants around the world.

The tourism body is also promoting its newly-renovated Korean Wave Pavilion part of its marketing activities centered around Hallyu or Korean pop culture.
The organization says it hopes Rain will help Korea attract seven million foreign visitors next year.

Rain, by the way, is set to kick off his world tour in Seoul on Friday.

"Even if he's out of shape, Rain is better than Daniel Henney"

The box office results last week can be summarized in the following sentence: "It is better to be a psycho than a charmer!"

"I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK", the film debut of Korea's top entertainer, Rain, went past Daniel Henney's "Seducing Mr. Perfect", and grabbed the no. 1 slot in last weekend's box office.

The box office results were based on the number of people who watched the films that were screened in Seoul during the two-day weekend.

"I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK", where Rain appears as a psychopath, drew 81,000 people to the 74 theaters in Seoul where it was shown, during the two-day weekend alone (December 9 and 10). The second-ranking "Seducing Mr. Perfect", on the other hand, drew an audience consisting of 78,000 people (69 theaters) on the same days, about 3,000 less than the people who saw the no. 1 movie during the weekend.

Although the two films were premiered on the same day (December 7), all in all, "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" drew about 80,000 more viewers than "Seducing Mr. Perfect" did. A total of 471,000 people watched "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK", while a total of 390,000 watched "Seducing Mr. Perfect".

These box office results were brought about mainly by the fierce loyalty of Rain's and of director Park Chan-wook's fans. During its press preview, "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" did not receive good reviews. On the other hand, "Seducing Mr. Perfect", despite its clumsy setting, was expected to be a huge hit mainly because of Daniel Henney's charms, which many female fans go gaga over. While the box office results of "Seducing Mr. Perfect" are thus far not bad, the film unexpectedly tagged behind "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" in the box office.

No. 3 in the box office was "Sunflower", a movie that's becoming an unexpected sensation in Korea. During the last two-day weekend, about 48,000 people trooped to the theaters where it was shown (50 theaters). Having been premiered three weeks ago, this film has thus far already drawn 1,237,000 viewers.

No. 4 was "Pan's Labyrinth", which was seen by 28,000 people last weekend (33 theaters), followed by "Saw 3", "Once in a Summer", and "The Departed".

A fantasy masterpiece set against the Spanish Civil War, "Pan's Labyrinth" has drawn an audience consisting of 416,000 people nationwide within two weeks of its premier. "Saw 3", for its part, drew a crowd consisting of 19,000 people during the last two-day weekend in Seoul (39 theaters). "Once in a Summer" and "The Departed" each drew an 11,000-strong audience. "Once in a Summer", however, surpassed "The Departed" by a narrow margin.

"Once in a Summer", featuring Korean top star Lee Byeong-Heon, attracted a 300,000-strong audience nationwide last week, a result that is poorer than expected.

RAIN "Se7en is my good junior"

"I have no competitor.... I treat Se7en as a good junior who is close to me..." said Rain.

Who is the Korean artist that Rain treats as his competitor?

This question was asked during an interview. "Many people will ask this question... Well, when I was young, I just simply think that Michael Jackson is my target! Recently, I've been travelling between USA and S. Korea... What I observed was: Actually the difference between our artists and theirs is small.... Their (USA artists) advantages are government support, systematic trainings and huge investment. In opposite, there are many talented artists in S. Korea but the investment is not enough. Entertainment industry is not simply focused on physical conditions. So I should train myself to think smartly in order to catch up with them!"

Later, Rain continued, "Michael Jackson was once my imaginary 'competitor', now I seldom think about competitions. Instead, I keep on working hard everyday. It's quite similar to the process of building great wall. 5 years ago, I worked for accomodation for my family, the car, or perhaps travelling. But now, I just simply look for happiness.

On the other hand, Rain was asked about Se7en, a dancer singer whose success path is similar to Rain. "I never think he is my competitor. He has his own strength, he's a junior that I like!"

South Korean director to get presidential award

Tue Dec 12, 12:28 PM ET

SEOUL (AFP) - A South Korean director who won the Grand Prize at the 2004 Cannes film festival is to receive a presidential award for raising the country's profile overseas, it was announced.

Park Chan-Wook took the Cannes prize with his revenge thriller "Old Boy," part of a trilogy, but has now branched out into romantic comedy with "I'm a Cyborg But That's Okay."

President Roh Moo-Hyun will present the award next Monday, the culture ministry said.

The second prize, from Prime Minister Han Myeong-Sook, will go to Park Jin-young, the impresario for singer and actor Rain.

Co-recipient will be Tony Park, executive vice president of HanbitSoft, which publishes popular games like Starcraft and Tantra.

The ministry said the annual awards are an expression of thanks from the government for individuals who helped popularize Korean pop culture abroad.

"I'm a Cyborg But That's Okay" is a marked departure from Park Chan-Wook's previous hard-boiled thrillers. It tells the story of girl who believes she is a cyborg and is confined to a mental institution, where she meets and falls in love with a fellow patient.

"I intended to make a film that I can enjoy with my (12-year-old) daughter, giggling together," Park said recently of the film, which stars Rain as the male lead.

RAIN, red carpet challenge in Cannes!

International singer RAIN, will soon accept the challenge to become an international actor.

"I'm Cyborg but that's okay" starring by Jeong Jihun (RAIN) and Lim Soojung, directed by Park Chan-woo may have the chance to attend Festival de Cannes held in May 2007. The person in charge of CJ Entertainment announced, "I'm Cyborg is going to participate international movie festivals in overseas..." CJ Entertainment is the investor cum distributor of this movie.

Director Park won "Grand prize for the Jury" in 2004 with his movie "Old Boy". There are three major international movie festivals, Festival de Cannes is one of them.

Using mental hospital as backgrond, "I'm Cyborg" is telling a love story in its very unique way. It is another artwork by director Park after a series of revenge movies such as "Old Boy", "Lady of Revenge".

With the reputation of director Park, as well as the uniqueness and box office of "I'm Cyborg", there's high chance that this movie will be inivited by Festival de Cannes to join the award competition.

On the other hand, if this movie is invited, Rain the male lead may step on its red carpet and he will be another focus by then.

Rain started to gain the concerns from USA media after his "Rainy Day" concert at Madison Square Garden, New York. As a singer, he was selected by TIME magazine as 'The 100 Most Influential People".

Commercial Vs. Avant-Garde: Park Chan-wook on 'Cyborg' (2006/12/07)

Park Chan-wook is likely to face only two responses -- enthusiasm and incomprehension -- when his new film "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" is released on Thursday. The movie deals with the romance between Yeong-gun (Im Soo-jeong), a patient at a mental hospital who believes she is a cyborg and refuses to eat, and Il-soon (Rain), a patient who tries to persuade her to eat. Full of pastel images, the movie is as unlike previous works such as "Old Boy" and "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" as you can get. That may be the reason quite a few viewers feel they have no idea what the movie is trying to say. But the director tells the Chosun Ilbo he has made a "viewer-friendly commercial film".

-- If this is viewer-friendly, what was it like when you first had the idea? Well, I think I changed it into a purely commercial movie. When I first conceived the plot, I wanted to depict a world of illusion and delusion. The story takes place in a mental hospital, as you know, and I wanted it to be complicated, confusing and perplexing.

-- It seems that everything in the movie challenges convention. The New World Mental Hospital is not the sort of mental hospital we usually imagine, and the romance between the two protagonists is totally novel. Think of this. There are images of mental hospitals created through movies like "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", and there are real mental hospitals. And people have their own image when they think of mental hospitals. But they all have to do with confinement and suppression. I wanted to change those images. I wanted to show that a mental hospital can be a bright, pleasant and lively place. I actually wish it really was.

-- You made up seven deadly sins for a cyborg, like sympathy and affection. Tell us more about the idea.
There are rather less important things like "fanciful ideas" and "hesitation". Ironically, they are feelings that a cyborg doesn't need but a human being does.

-- "Fanciful ideas" and "hesitation" are things that characterize you to some degree, aren't they?
(Laughs) You need them in this business.

-- Im and Rain show a totally different side of themselves in the movie. It's amazing to see Lim play a cyborg.
"Perfect" isn't even the word to describe her acting. She plays the character way better than I imagined. I was amazed to see her become the character. There's a tendency today to put the stress on realism in acting. Of course, that's important, but sometimes different ways of acting are also needed.

-- You may feel uncomfortable with this question, but narrative accounts for not more than 30 percent of your movie. Is that a way of expressing your desire as director to communicate with the unique language of film, which is different from literature.
I can't agree with that. I don't at all think that narrative is decreasing in my films. It's natural for me as a film director to try to differentiate film from literature. But I don't think such efforts affect the narrative.

-- Despite that, some viewers say that it's hard to understand your movies.
(Sighs) What more can I do to help them… ? When the movie was previewed, I found that the younger viewers were, the more easily they understood it, and that the more educated viewers were, the more perplexed they were. I think those educated viewers think too much about trivial things, like "what is the message of the movie?" and "What is it the director is trying to say?" It's not hard to understand a movie if viewers are just absorbed in it and let themselves be part of it.

-- Another uncomfortable question. Some directors joke that you have "tyrannical" power in the film world because no one except you can cast top stars like Im and Rain in an avant-garde film.
I want to tell those who say this that I didn't get what I have now for free. I had to make desperate efforts to survive for quite a long time and paid for everything I have now. Let me say once again: My new movie is not an experimental movie at all. It's just a little unusual. I think that is acceptable. The two stars were paid less than half of what they usually earn. And that helped cut the production budget [W3.1 billion (US$1=W916)].

-- To change the subject, the movie is a lot more heart-warming than your previous vengeance trilogy. Has your world view changed?
(After long pause) It is hard to give a black and white answer. It's true that I've changed and gotten more generous, but the problem is I may change again. For example, my next movie will not be heartwarming at all, but rather cruel and bitter. But I'm an artist who has the freedom to change anytime.

-- It seems you have really become generous.
I now feel that hostility, discontent and all sorts of feeling I had in the past were immature. Isn't it rather easy to talk about despair and pessimism in life? What is difficult is talking about hope and love, especially in this complex, difficult world. What's more, they have to be talked about in a non-hypocritical way, and there lies the biggest challenge.

For Rain, 'Cyborg' may prove a stepping stone to world fame

By Kim Hyun

SEOUL, Dec. 6 (Yonhap) -- Rain may be taking a gamble playing a psychiatric patient for his big-screen debut, but the Korean singer-actor, currently on a world tour, is steadily reinventing himself as he prepares to flood the world stage.

IPB Image

"This will be a new image of me," he told Yonhap News Agency at a downtown cafe in Seoul.

"If I had to pick one, the image of me in the movie is closer to who I really am than the Rain you see on the singing stage."

Rain will debut in "I'm a Cyborg, But That's Okay," directed by Park Chan-wook and set for local release on Thursday. In light of Park's success with "Old Boy," which picked up the Grand Prix at Cannes two years ago, the movie is almost certain to get a worldwide release, something Rain hopes will raise his standing in global terms.

"Now I feel that I have taken the first step," he said. "To me, the issue was that the director was Park Chan-wook. He was the director I liked as a fan, and with whom so many actors wanted to work. I thought there would definitely be things he could teach me (as an actor)."

Ranked among Time's 100 most influential figures this year, Rain has been a superstar in Asia with four albums and three hit TV dramas under his belt, but his star quality hasn't translated into global appeal.

His sold-out shows at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City in February received mixed reviews that pinned him down as a star with more local than universal attraction. His storied past as a struggling backup dancer with a poor family has shadowed his career. Now, at 25, he is finally transcending his past and his homeland with the leap to the silver screen.

Playing a psychiatric ward patient in "Cyborg" required him to shed his onstage persona and appear blank and inexpressive in a bulky white gown. His character, incarcerated for his anti-social behavior that developed after his mother deserted him, falls in love with a girl who believes she is a cyborg, played by Lim Soo-jung.

Despite his commended acting in South Korean TV dramas, Rain, who uses his real name Jeong Ji-hun for the film, said he had some headaches acting for the big screen.

"The reason it was so difficult was because, you know, you look sad when you're sad, you laugh when something is funny - but the director wasn't happy."

"I asked him how I should act, and he said, 'You are sad, but you shouldn't be sad.' I asked, 'Wouldn't it be better to show some sign of tears?' He said, 'No, maybe not.' But I did well-up in one scene. It was declared an NG at the time, but he used it, maybe because my feelings were genuine."

Rain was referring to a scene where his character looks at the cyborg's scrawny, naked body as she refuses to eat. He finally gets her to swallow a spoonful of rice by inventing a tool that transforms food into energy.

Park said that casting Rain totally changed the dynamic of the film. What was originally intended to be an experimental and low-budget affair ended up needing rewrites and more cash to fit his star persona.

"I initially thought of this film as one of my HD projects, or something in-between," Park said at a recent press screening, "But that idea was thrown out because Jeong Ji-hun was cast."

Rain's caring, supportive role in the film fits with his kind image, but not with his reputation as a self-made man who trains mercilessly to stay on top. When starting out, he famously plastered his bedroom walls with inspirational mottos like "You will fall the moment you relax."

Fortunately, mentor and singer Park Jin-young was there to provide a safety net after his first high-school band collapsed. Park, a famous singer himself, spotted the young back-up dancer at an audition and decided to mentor him. The result? Rain's debut album "Bad Guy" came out in 2002.

But his past refused to sink quietly into the background. He broke down while accepting the top prize at the KBS annual music awards in 2004 while paying tribute to his mother, who died from complications of diabetes before his album came out. More tears followed at a concert in January 2005. Stories about his impoverished family circulated.

Not that the rumor-mongers hampered his success. Rain was the first Asian to hold a concert at the U.S. prestigious Madison Square Garden, and his fourth album "Rain's World" was released across Asia last month. He now has world tour commitments in Seoul, Las Vegas and Singapore among others.

"Cyborg" co-star Lim says his success is a product of hard graft and intense self-discipline.

"He's really tough on himself," Lim said. "While shooting the film, he had to practice singing and dancing while juggling schedules abroad, but still when it came time to shoot, he became Il-sun (his character) and got totally immersed in it, which wouldn't be possible if he weren't so focused."

With his trademark charm, washboard abs and slender, yet muscular body not on show in the movie, Rain's staking everything on his ability to act -- and Park's ability to direct.

"Like everybody knows, he's really famous in Europe and elsewhere. He's really a world-renowned director, so hopefully our movie will be screened widely overseas."

Cyborg and The Restless Pre-Sales at AFM

Sales and Distribution arm of Korea's CJ Entertainment concluded a number of deals on pre-sales of director Park Chan-wook's "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" and JO Dong-oh's The Restless at the American Film Market which wrapped up earlier this month.

PARK's Cyborg is being billed as romantic-comedy, and stars Im Soo-jeong and Korea's hottest international pop-star Rain in his big-screen debut. The domestic release of the film is scheduled for December 7th, and is rated 12, marking it the first General Admission rating for the director. PARK is known internationally for his bloody revenge trilogy, the second installment of which, "Old Boy" won the Grand Prize at Cannes in 2004.

While the script is still under wraps, the film was sold on the strength of its director, the unusual synopsis, and its star-power. Pre-sales in south-east Asia, where actor Rain is a pop phenomenon, went to Golden Scene for Hong Kong, M Pictures for Thailand, Encore Films for Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, and DHD for Vietnam. The film was also sold to PT Parkit for India, and Ama Films for Greece, while a major deal for France, where PARK's films are well-received, is on the verge of conclusion.

Martial arts fantasy "The Restless", also created a buzz, with technical staff from stellar swordplay film Musa: The Warrior, Akira Kurosawa's costume designers, and Hero's art director all working together to create a the setting of a netherworld somewhere between death and reincarnation. It stars Korean wave celebrity JEONG Woo-sung and was filmed at the Hengdian Studios in China on a budget of US$9 million.

CJ Entertainment provided a 15-minute trailer of the film which was enough to seal pre-sales deals to Splendid for Germany and the Benelux territories, Central Partnership for Russia, Shapira Films for Israel, Eco Films for Portugal, D Productions for Turkey, PT Parkit for India, New Star for Brazil, Intersonic for the Czech and Hungarian territories, Polmedia for Poland, Bulgaria and Romania, Fivia for the ex-Yugoslavian territories, and Video Sonic for Greece. In south-east Asia rights went to Blitz for Indonesia, Sound Space for Singapore and Malaysia, Scholar for Taiwan, and Time Vision for Vietnam.

CJ Ent. also sold director Yoo Ha's A Dirty Carnival, featuring hot new star Jo In-Seong, and released locally earlier this year, to Visual Films for Brazil.
