Hear: Why does it always rain on me?
Reviews by Chow Ee-Tan and Max Koh
ETERNAL RAIN
Rain (King Records)
Korean pop sensation Rain, who has conquered Asia by storm and has released three K-Pop albums, has come out with his first J-Pop album to add to his dominance in the Japanese market.
In this album, the 24-year-old hunk, known in Korea as Bi (which translate as rain) and whose real name is Jung Ji Hoon, offers music across genres from fast and groovy hip-hop and dance tracks to more sensual R&B numbers.
Fast tracks are the order of the day including tracks like Free Way (track 1) which also comes in a remix version (track 12), Baby Baby (track 5), and Rain’s collaboration with Japan’s emerging hip-hop diva Al in Oh Yeah (track 2).
Meanwhile, Sad Tango (which also has an English version) is a Latin-influenced number that will also puts one in the dance mood.
Rain’s vocals have shown considerable improvement in control and technique, and he exuberates expressions and feelings while interpreting love songs.
His clear diction is commendable, even when singing the English number.
Fans would be glad to know the album comes with a VCD that features a special recording of his two concerts in Japan as well as exclusive behind-the-scene and interview footage. — CE
Selected tracks: Free Way, Sad Tango, Because of You, Move On Performance: ***½
