[TheStar] Saving for a RAIN-y day, Malaysia November 29, 2006

No pain, no Rain. Avid fans of the Korean pop star are working extra hard to pay for their concert tickets, discovers NUR AMIRA ABDUL KARIM.

JUST so that he can watch his favourite Korean pop idol Rain perform at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in January, Azekiel Cheung has started putting in two extra shifts a week as a coffee barista.

The part-time student, who earns S$5 (RM11.70) an hour, now works eight-hour shifts three times a week to pay off his debt of S$388 (RM908). He now takes home S$40 (RM94) for each eight-hour shift and has to work 10 shifts, or 80 hours, so that he can catch his idol in action.

The avid fan bought his concert ticket with the help of a friend who is a credit card holder.

Korean pop star Rain is causing Singaporean youths to incur huge debts and slog it out at their jobs.
With concert tickets starting at S$188, many are scrimping to watch Rain live in concert.

They were offered priority booking for the concert when the tickets went on sale two weeks ago. He plans to pay her back in instalments of S$100 a month, which is 20 hours’ worth of work.

Azekiel, 18, plans to sneak off on Jan 21 to catch Rain’s concert. His parents don’t know about his ticket purchase.

“They’d be furious if they found out,” he said. “My parents are very strict about money and they think that listening to music is a waste of time. I don’t have a choice but to find my own means to pay for the ticket.”

Also working hard to pay for the coveted concert tickets is undergraduate Wong Yihui, 21, who works two to three days a week at an accounting firm for S$10 (RM23.40) an hour. Each session is two or three hours long. She recently bought a S$188 (RM440) ticket.

Said Yihui: “I didn’t expect the tickets to be so expensive.

“I had to make a snap decision when the tickets were up for sale because seats were being filled up so fast. I didn’t want to miss an opportunity to watch Rain live.”

She is making a lot of sacrifices to catch the concert, including giving up a short holiday.

“My friends and I had planned to go to Malaysia to unwind after the exams. We estimated the trip would cost around S$300, but after buying the concert ticket, I can’t afford to go anymore.”

The sensational pop star who is causing these teens to part with their hard-earned money is 24-year-old Rain or Jung Ji Hoon, as he is known in Korea.

The singer-actor’s hit drama series, Full House, which has aired all over Asia, catapulted him to fame in Singapore when it was shown on cable TV last year.

His debut concert in Singapore on Jan 21 next year has set a record for the priciest concert tickets in the island republic.

The most expensive tickets for the performance at the Singapore Indoor Stadium are going for S$888 (RM2,080). There are about 200 of those tickets. Other tickets cost S$188 (RM440), S$288 (RM674), S$388 (RM908) and S$688 (RM1,610).

The S$888 and S$688 tickets are not available to the public – all of them have been bought up by sponsors and Rain’s international fan club; 60% of the other tickets have also been taken up.

A number of the teens who have tickets for the show are keeping mum about their plans. They do not want their names mentioned or their pictures used in the paper for fear that their parents would find out about them spending so much on a concert.

Older fans of Rain too are secretive about their support. Some felt they are too old to be fans, while others plan to disappear from work on “urgent leave” to catch the concert. They do not want their bosses to find out about their ruse in The Sunday Times, they said.

The Korean idol played two sold-out nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden in February this year. In May, he was named the second most influential entertainer in the world by Time magazine.

Following his rise to stardom is fan Chen Yicui, 23. The business management student, who has Rain’s music CDs and DVDs as well as pictures of him on her laptop, paid for her S$188 ticket by dipping into her savings.

She has cut back on food and snacks, and goes out less often with her friends.

“But it’s really good timing. I’m having my exams soon. I feel the pinch less, because I have less time to go out anyway.”

Unlike her peers who have to scrimp and save in order to watch their favourite singer perform live, student Neo S.T., 21, was lucky enough to have her S$388 ticket subsidised by an elder cousin who is also crazy about Rain. She paid only S$188 while her cousin paid the rest.

She said: “My cousin convinced me to get the pricier ticket after we looked at the seating plan. If we had bought the cheapest ticket, we would have such a poor view of the stage that we’d be better off listening to his CD at home.”

S.T., who took courses to learn the Korean language after becoming a Rain fan, may give tuition to her cousin’s eight-year-old son. She would like to pay off the S$200 subsidy.

Beaming, she said: “I’ll do what it takes to pay my cousin backThe opportunity to see Rain up close is something I don’t want to miss.”

KTW said "Bi is thrifty!"

Singer Kim Tae Woo (KTW) said "Rain is thrifty... He seldom treat people meal..."

KTW, the singer who is from the same entertainment agency as World Star RAIN, performed in a musical program of KBS 2TV on Nov 25. In this program, KTW has mentioned Rain's thrifty character in a humourous way: It's very difficult to ask Rain to treat a meal!

KTW recalled and agreed that Rain has changed a lot now, compared to the time when he was still a newbie. And his changes are much greater than KTW's. However, one thing of Rain that never change is: He seldom treats people eating.

There was once KTW questioned Rain who is one year younger than him, "Hey that's not good..." Guess what Rain said? "Hyung is so called 'hyung' because they treat the younger, right?"

Singer Star who attended the same program also added, "One day Rain invited us to barbeque shop... At the end he said that he forgot to bring wallet... So finally the bill was paid by his assistant using company's credit card...."

Nonetheless, both KTW and Star did agree that Rain is a very considerate person. His concern and caring to juniors are always shown in his attitude. (Haha they said something good in the end coz told bad things about Rain?nah~~ kidding!)
Well, they think that Rain is very busy in these few years, and he doesn't even have time to eat with friends.

Rain in US Preparing for "Thank You Concert"

24 Nov 06, Sports Chosun (Chinese)
Credit: Rainhk.com Jinlees@soompi
Ch to Eng: rayndrop

Asian Megastar Rain is currently preparing for his "Thank You Concert", slated to happen in Vegas during May next year.

Rain will become the first Korean artiste to hold a global concert tour when he holds his US Vegas Concert on the 23rd and 24th December this year at the Caesar Palace. Although the concert has not kicked off formally, various concert venues in Las Vegas have approached Rain in hope of becoming the organiser for his "Thank You Concert".

A representative of Star M, the company in charge of producing this global concert tour, revealed their intention to have a mega-scale "Thank You Concert". Caesar Palace is able to accommodate 3,800 pax, but the concert location required must be able to hold at least 150,000 pax. If the concert in December is a means to break into the most popular tourist city in the US and not to make profit, then the "Thank You Concert" must be able to take in considerable amount of profit to prove that Rain has indeed made the leap and become a global star.

Tickets for the December concerts have been sold out. This is an indication of Rain's popularity in the US. At the same time, the Global Concert Tour schedule is now more or less complete. With the Las Vegas performance as a kick off, he will be holding concerts in Hawaii in December, as well as China and Japan next year. In February, he will also be holdinghis concerts in New York, Toronto, Las Vegas and other parts of US.

In order for Rain to truly become a global star, they are considering if they want to extend the global tour to cover an even bigger area on the world map. They are now preparing to hold a Korean singers concert in Dubai. The Commonwealth of Australia has also extended their invitation to Rain.

In addition, Rain is now in negotiation with an airline company. The dancers and crew members together with Rain make up a force of 70 members. Airline expenses for the crew alone is expected to reach 4 billion won. In addition, the transportation expenses will add on to expenses significantly.

The represenative from Star M says, "The plane body will be painted with Rain's Coming World Tour promotional message. This expense alone will incur about 3 million won. If we can improve the airline company's image with the help of Rain, using the airplane as a promotion tour may be a good proposal."

Self-directed drama by Rain? No, it's a big loss to him!

Singer RAIN has expressed his decision to take legal action against those involved in the spreading of his unreleased new song. With regards to the comments from internet "This is just a self-directed drama..." "They just wanna make up some news", Rain's entertainment agency JYPE has denied these comments and said they are ridiculous!

Other than overseas websites, this song is also widely spread around most famous Korean websites. This is a duet song between Rain and Omarion, a famous American R&B singer.

From a telephone interview with JYPE spokesman on Nov 21, "It was like a precious being stolen from us, how can people say 'they purposely want to bring up news'? Rain and Omarion both experienced losses... This song is composed by Park Jinyoung, even great singer like Chris Brown is deeply impressed by his talent! An artistry work between Eastern and Western genius is simply wasted like this... Originally, we plan to produce this song as an international single, as well as filming MV. Also we intend to include this song in Rain's next album or sell to USA pop singers... Yet now everything is gone.. "

So far, JYPE determined that the master copy might be released accidentally in foreign countries, and they are now tracing the possible exposure channels of master copy. Meanwhile, JYPE also issued official investigation document to the related personnels (from Sony BMG and TUG) that handled master copy.

Is Rain Worth It? High Concert Ticket Prices Raise Eyebrows

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia
Staff Reporter

Korean superstar Rain, who goes by his real name Chung Ji-hoon when acting, will soon embark on an ambitious world tour.

K-pop superstar Rain's upcoming world concert tour is generating a lot of buzz. After all, ``Rain's Coming 06/07 World Tour'' is perhaps the most ambitious and expensive world concert tour by any Korean artist.

Expectations are running high for Rain's world tour, which has been called a ``make it or break it” tour since it will test his popularity and ability to appeal to people in different countries. With the budget for the concert reportedly reaching several millions of dollars, it is no wonder why concert tickets are being sold at a premium price.

The most expensive tickets for Rain's concerts cost 176,000 won (US$189) in Seoul, US$261 (244,000 won) in Las Vegas and US$313 (293,000 won) in Singapore.

Rain officially kicks off his world tour in Seoul on Dec. 15 and 16 at the Olympic Park Gymnasium. He is then scheduled to perform on Dec. 23 and 24 at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Tickets for the Las Vegas concerts are already sold out at Ticketmaster, even with the price of US$89 to US$261.

Celine Dion also holds concerts at the Colosseum, charging US$165 to US$350 for tickets. The Colosseum has a capacity of 3,800.

For Rain's concerts, organizers have arranged tour package deals for overseas fans who want to attend the concert and take a vacation in Las Vegas.

However, some U.S.-based fans were disappointed with the expensive ticket prices and the concert dates, which are scheduled right before the Christmas holiday. This has dissuaded younger fans from attending the concert.

For the Jan. 21 concert in Singapore, the front row seats were initially to cost as much as 530,000 won or US$570 each. However, these pricey seats are being reserved especially for VIP and purchasers of special package tours.

According to Regina Wong, Singapore's representative for Rain's International Fan Club, JYP Entertainment has also allocated 100 seats in these VIP sections for fan club members at only US$200 each. ``JYPE put the seats up for sale last week and the 100 tickets at US$200 each were sold in 5 minutes,'' she said.

Tickets for the Singapore concert are now sold to the public for as high as US$313 (293,000 won). Rain's concert tickets are even more expensive than the priciest ticket to guitar legend's Eric Clapton's concert in Singapore, which go for US$256 or 240,000 won.

On the Singapore ticketing Web site, Rain's concert is billed as the ``largest project in scale among world tours by a Korean artist'' and ``at par with Madonna's latest tour.''

Some of the reasons for the expensive ticket prices are the high production costs and that Rain has hired prominent concert production people. These include stage director Jaime King, who has choreographed dance moves for Madonna and Britney Spears; Roy Bennett, who was production designer for Paul McCartney's 2005 U.S. tour; and visual director Dago Gonzalez.

Star M, organizer of Rain's tour, said in a press release earlier that Rain's world tour is expected to generate 106 billion won (US$113 million) in revenue. It estimated that 56 billion won (US$59 million) will come from admission fees and the rest from tour copyrights, DVD sales and merchandising.

Rain is scheduled to hold a concert on Feb. 3 in Bangkok. Concert dates are also being planned for Japan, Vietnam, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Taiwan.

Rain might boost up RK Media, Thailand

Thailand: RK Media Holding plc faces uncertain outlook
Thai Press Reports (Thailand)
November 13, 2006

Section: Corporate News - RK Media Holding Plc will face an uncertain outlook since the future of its core TV and radio business, which accounts for 85% of total revenue, remains unclear, the Bangkok Post reports.

Chief executive officer Kittiwat Manosuthi acknowledged that the business plans for its 32 radio channels, whose income made up 79% of the company's total revenue of 145 million baht in the first three quarters, had been put on hold, pending decisions on whether their concessions would be renewed later this year.
The concessions to run the radio stations in key provinces excluding Bangkok will expire by the end of this year.

The MAI-listed media company would be selective and apply for renewals of only profitable stations, as the accumulated losses of 112 million baht in the January-September period mainly came from the radio business.

Its radio stations outside Bangkok could not compete with community radio stations, whose advertising fees are five times lower than those charged by RK.

As for the TV business, RK Media's new CEO will focus more on providing more sports and entertainment content. Currently, it produces only one food programme aired on iTV.

Mr Kittiwat said RK was in talks with a number of TV operators and expected to reach a conclusion by the end of this year before new programmes for 2007 were announced.

The good news for RK Media so far this year has been the concert by South Korean superstar Jung Ji-Hoon or Rain in February. The concert was a smash hit among local teenagers.

The next Rain concert will take place in Bangkok next February. The investment for next year's show, mostly from bank loans, will exceed the 50 million baht spent last year, he said.

''Importing concerts will become our new business, alongside digital media,'' said Mr Kittiwut, who has a background in finance and information technology.

RK Media, which has suffered losses for seven consecutive quarters, projected the third quarter would be its worst before the company started recovering in the first quarter of next year.

In the July-September period, it lost 54 million baht, compared to 14 million baht in the same period of last year.

RK shares closed on November 8 on the SET at 3.14 baht, up 12 satang, in trade worth 70 million baht.

Song by Rain & Omarion being Circulated Illegally on Internet

Yonhap News
Credit: biwithrain
Kr to Ch: irbi@biwithrain
Ch to Eng: rayndrop

Recently, the song sang by singer-actor Rain (24 years old) and Omarion (22 years old) has been circulating illegally online. Rain's agency, JYPE has entrusted the case to the local police for investigation.

JYPE said on the 21st, "From 16th onwards, the song "Man Up" has appeared simultaneouly in several overseas blogs and fansites. This song is not sang by Rain alone, but is a joint effort by Rain and Omarion. On the 17th, we have entrusted the Internet Investigation Force of Seoul Kangnam Police with the case of this song leaking out to the public."

JYPE also expressed, "This song, which was produced by Park Jinyoung, was recorded this summer and was meant to be included in both Rain's and Omarion's albums. The song may be in the midst of being leaked out systematically abroad. We are hence looking for a solution to stop this. We've also issued official letters to Sony BMG as well as Omarion's agency, TUG, asking for their understanding on this matter. Previously, we had supplied Song BMG with a copy of this song."

Upon hearing this piece of news, both Park Jinyoung and Rain expressed their regret that a song they have put in so much effort to put together is now being circulated illegally online. They hope such incidents will not happen again in future.

Director Park: Drenched by the Rain

Chosun Sports
Kr to Ch: wwrain
Ch to Eng: rayndrop

Jihoon in Director Park's eyes:

1. Carefree
2. No vices
3. No secrets
4. Down-to-earth
5. Smart with fast reflex
6. Great acting skills

When the movie "Cyborg" was about to show, Director Park Chan Wook kept smiling. This is not his first his first or second movie, but this time, it feels like he's awarded with a special prize. That's because the censorship board rated this movie as "12 and above". Director Park has been working hard to make this a movie which fathers can take their daughters to. In the past, he had believed that "Sympathy for Lady Vengence" would be rated 15 and above, but he was dealt with a blow. So this time, it's double joy for him. To Director Park, this is a new challenge - his first attempt to film a movie with a youthful theme, and at the same time, it's Rain (Jeong Jihoon)'s first big-screen movie....(omitted)

Q: This time, the participation of Rain attracted much attraction. How did you two first meet?

park: I got to know about Rain through Park Jinyoung. Once, when we were having dinner with some other people, Park Jinyoung started handing out CDs, one for each person. The CD says "Rain". I thought it was the name of the featured song. Later, I learnt that it was the name of the singer, and I thought, "What a strange name." I think it was the time he made his debut and was starting his promotional activities.

Q: How did you first discover Rain's acting skills?

Park: During one of the movie award ceremony, I saw him dancing with Lee Hyori. You could tell the kind of vitality he possesses. He doesn't just dance well, but has a showmanship like that of Michael Jackson. You could easily imagine him in a movie. During the ceremony, I saw the looks and unwavering attention the actresses were giving him, and I thought, "He is a charismatic youth indeed!" But at that time, I thought, "When can we work together? I guess the possibility is not great..." So I let it go at that...

Q: How fated are you and Rain?

Park: During the sound dubbing for "Sympathy for Lady Vengence", Rain came to visit our production team. After work, we went for a drink together. We had drinks together again during the VIP movie premier. Because Sung Kang-ho and Chol Min-chi like him a lot, so I unconsciously, I trusted him too. At first when I was preparing to film a movie with youthful theme, my mind was all filled with images of Rain. I didn't have time to go think about other actors. It's exactly the same case when I was filming "Sympathy for Lady Vengence". The first person I thought of was Lee Young-ae.

Q: Now that you know Rain, what do you think of this person?

Park: Carefree, no vices, no hidden secrets, very down-to-earth. He's exactly who he is when you see him normally. There's no feeling of a dark, hidden side. His character is uniform inside-out. I want to let all these show through the movie.

Q: How's Rain as an actor?

Park: He can feel very well. In acting, it is very important to be able to grasp the moments. Because he is very smart, he understands what I tell him very quickly, and can express the things I want.

Q: What's the story behind choosing Im Soo Jung as Rain's co-actress?

Park: Rain suggested it. He said he hopes for Im Soo Jung to take up this role. I naturally agree with him.

Rain to challenge illegal tickets!

Rain is going to proclaim war against the illegal ticket selling!

According to NetWorkLive's annoucement on Nov 17, they will sue the persons involved in illegal ticket selling or entering the concert hall using illegal tickets. NetWorkLive is the organiser of Rain's Seoul concerts at Jamsil Olympia stadium on Dec 15 & 16. In the first round of ticket booking on Nov 2, all 10,000 tickets were sold out shortly. The server of ticketing even went down within 3 minutes!

Although there's no high price illegal ticket so far, they are worry that some people may resell the concert tickets to fans at unreasonably high price, especially those who are not able to buy ticket in the second round of ticketing on Nov 20, 4pm.

In fact, the free tickets for Rain's Showcase on Oct 13 were also sold at 250,000 Won to fans through internet.

Cyborg Press Conference

Credit: ent.tom.com// baidu.com// qiqi@biwithrain
Kr to Ch: 夏天 (xiatian); Edited by 阿第 (Ah Di)
Ch to Eng: rayndrop

9th November, 11am. Movie "I'm a Cyborg but that's Ok" press conference was held at Imperial Palace Hotel, Seoul. Well-known director Pak Chan Wook appeared at the event together with leading actress Im Soo Jung and leading actor Jeong Jihoon. Pak Chan Wook, Rain and Im Soo Jung can be viewed as three of the most popular figures in the Korean entertainment industry today. This point alone was sufficient to attract the media's attention.

"I'm a Cyborg but that's Ok" is a romantic comedy which speaks of a love story based in an asylum between a girl, Young-gun (played by Im Soo Jung) who thinks she's a cyborg, and a guy, Il-sun, who does not care that Young-gun is a cyborg.

Director Pak enjoys significant popularity overseas because of the two movies directed, "Sympathy for Lady Vengence" and "Old Boy". The movie this time is entirely different from Director pak's usual style. It is a movie filled with elements of science fiction and romance. During the press conference, Director Pak expressed that he has been wanting to do a new movie with an entirely fresh concept that is more light-hearted. He is filled with anticipation for this new piece of work.

The other limelight of this movie is the participation of the Korean entertainment industry's "heavenly king and queen". Im Soo Jung's popularity has been surging in Korea recently, while Rain's singing performance career is at its peak. Im Soo Jung joked and said that she plays a girl who has mental problems. Since nobody is able to understand her, she can act in whichever weird ways she likes. Rain continued to maintain his gentle and humble demeanor and said, "I'm very happy to be working with Director Park and Im Soo Jung. I'm grateful to the crew members who gave him plenty of assistance. We believe the partnership between the two will ignite much brilliant sparks.

Q: You have many scenes in the movie when you mumble to yourself. Do you do that normally?

Im Soo Jung: I don't have that habit (laughs)! At the beginning, I didn't know how I was going to act this part. Later, Director Pak told me to imagine that I'm actually a cyborg who is only capable of communicating with lifeless people, to imagine non-living things as living friends.

Q: What did you gain from the process of filming this movie?

Jeong Jihoon: The movie woke up many dusty memories of mine. The side of my character which has been ignored has surfaced once again. Il-sun's stubborness, cuteness, youthful rashness and innocence belong to a side of me which I rarely show. Through the playing of this character, I found myself again. Also, Il-sun is a guy with a strong sense of responsibility. He's always looking out for others. This is something that touches me very much.

Q: Please tell us why you decided to cast Rain and Im Soo Jung?

Pak Chan Wook: I've always been hoping for a chance to rope Rain in for my project. The first time I saw him was at the voice-dubbing session for "Sympathy for Lady Vengence". He was there to look for Lee Young-Ae, and was quietly watching us work from aside, secretly learning. At that time, I thought to myself, "A hardworking young man as such will most certainly make it big one day. Although I've never found the right opportunity for us to work together, but I've never stopped paying attention to him. Im Soo Jung is one of the female actresses whom I like a lot. In particular, her performance in the drama serial "School 4" left a deep impression on me. I've always been monitoring her progress. Through the years, her acting has matured significantly. When I decided to do a project with a youthful theme, she's the first person I thought of.

Q: What is the message you are hoping to convey to viewers through this movie?

Jeong Jihoon: I hope that after watching this movie, people will look forward to a wonderful life from the bottom of their hearts, and pay more concern to mental patients. We often discriminate against mental patients, but the truth is, they are a lot more simple and innocent compare to us. They possess the utmost innocence qualities of normal people. We shouldn't discriminate against and give up on them. Instead, we should give them more concern.

Q: The OST of this movie "Lullaby" is performed by you. It's very nice.

Jeong Jihoon: This is the first time I'm singing a lullaby since my debut. Lullabies are not difficult to sing, but the person singing it must sing it from his/ her heart. You need to sing it with a heart full of love to console the person you love deeply.

Rain Gets a Baby Shower

The workaholic K-pop superstar Rain is participating in a photography exhibition to help children without families. The Love Photography Exhibition has been held annually since 2003 by the Social Welfare Society and photographer Cho Sei-hon to help children in government care and aims to match unfortunate children with loving adoptive parents. When Rain heard about the exhibition, he reportedly said, "If we can find a warm family for just one of the children, I'd be happy to be a part of it". And when the time came, he was there to be a part of the shoot despite his tightly packed schedule.

But at the shoot, Rain was perplexed when he had to pose with a one-month-old baby in his arms. "I don't really know how to hold a baby", he said. When the shoot was nearly over, the infant suddenly had an "accident" all over the singer, making the crowd burst into laughter. "The new surroundings may have made the baby nervous, which lead to the discourtesy", Cho says. "Rain's clothes and hands were soaked in pee, but he wasn't at all annoyed, and instead said baby urine is a 'good thing'."

The event will run on Dec. 20-26 in the Insa Art Center in Insa-dong, Seoul, with entertainers including Rain, Kim Jeong-eun, who is a honorary PR ambassador for the Social Welfare Society, Kim Hye-soo, Son Ye-jin and SG Wannabe participating.

Actor Rain

In his latest film, director Park Chan-wook has chosen love as his subject matter instead of his usual theme of revenge. The main actor of the film, Jeong Ji-hoon, also known as Rain, also made an interesting choice: film instead of TV soap operas.

His film debut is drawing a lot of attention. The movie has not yet been released, so his performance in the movie will be judged later. But after a four year TV career as a singer and an actor, his screen debut as the main actor of "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" directed by Park is stimulating the curiosity of movie-goers.

He may have felt pressure, expectations, and challenge. But when he was interviewed, what he mentioned first was about how great director Park was.

"What do I think about Park? He is the consummate Korean movie director. Many people asked me about the pressure, but I was just grateful for this opportunity. That was all I felt during the shooting. As you may know Park is really kind and gentle. He didn't criticize me much and I had fun".

The first thing he had to do as a film actor was to forget his persona as a singer Rain.

The first thing he had to do for the role was to shake off the image of pop star Rain. He played a role as deranged Park Il-soon and had to hide his voluptuous muscular body beneath a baggy patient gown in the movie. His messy hair also expressed the extraordinary character he played, similar to the way actress Kang Hye-jeong did when she was featured in the movie "Welcome to Dongmakgol". He learned to yodel from singer Seo Young-rul to sink into his role as one who mimics others' talents, like yodeling and playing ping-pong. Given this, it is not like he gained his film opportunity for nothing. What else did he do for the movie? He answered properly as usual.

"It is not like I got the idea from other films or novels. I was just immersed in the role. I was Park Il-soon, not Jung Ji-hoon, during the shooting. That's how I forgot my ego as a singer".

He said he had no accidents or funny incidents during the shooting. The atmosphere was so quiet that it made him feel confused whether he was on the movie set. But he said he only had pleasant memories. He almost seemed to murmur like Park Il-soon, "I am a new comer, but I was OK".

Vengeance trilogy director Park Chan-wook returns with romantic comedy starring Rain

By Kim Hyun

SEOUL, Nov. 9 (Yonhap) -- Fresh from making hard-boiled thrillers, South Korea's Park Chan-wook said Thursday that he wanted to deliver a romantic story that "smells like fruit" this time.

"I'm a Cyborg, But That's Okay", Park's seventh feature, is to debut in theaters next month, basking in the heightened attention for its male lead, star singer and actor Rain (called Bi in Korean). Dubbed as "a kind of romantic comedy" by the director, the story of a young female mental patient who believes she is a cyborg and her male mate who chases after her marks the director's return, far from the the Vengeance triology.

"Believe it or not, it's true that this is the movie I made", Park said in a press conference to announce the end of the producton.

"It was good that I could cast young actors. Somehow I wanted to return to my childish dream. I wanted to make a movie that is as fresh as them and that smells like fruit. An age 12-rated movie that I can watch with my daughter".
Its female lead is Im Soo-jeong, who played a blameless heroine in the popular Korean television drama series, "Sorry, I Love You", which aired last year in eight Asian countries, including China, Japan, Singapore and Vietnam.

"The mental patients all have their own unique universe. It could be nothing more than an illusion in the eye of normal people. But it is an indispensible one, the only and very realistic world to that person. So if they talk to each other about their own universe, wouldn't that be a kind of what we call love?" he said in a Seoul hotel packed with hundreds of local and foreign journalists, where some scenes from the film were screened.

Making his screen debut with the established director, Rain said he saw the pristine state of humans from the wacky, disorderly mental hospital.

"I interpret this movie as a message of hope for the world. The patients in the hospital live with feelings of irritation and distance from the world, but I felt that they are very good natured and naive and more highly-focused than any normal people", he said.

"I'm a Cyborg, But That's Okay" is to be released nationwide on Dec. 7.

Oricon's concern about RAIN & se7en, regarding their entrance into US market!

The most authoritative Japanese musical board- ORICON, shows concerns on Rain and se7en, especially their entrance and future development in USA market!

"The adorable Korean singers may be successful in USA!" This was stated in Oricon's latest article which analysed the possibility of Rain and se7en to succeed in USA market, since both of them announced their future planning to develop there.

Music producer of se7en is Ricky Harrison (to be confirmed the spelling), who is also produced albums for Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez etc. Oricon commented that they have a feeling "A global artiste from Korea will be born soon!"

On the other hand, Rain starts his world tour in this coming December, Seoul concerts are the first two concerts, followed by USA, Singapore, Japan, etc... His USA concert will be the main focus, especially JAmie King and some of the famous producers are involved. Jamie King was previously in charge of tour concerts of Madonna, Christina Aguilera etc.

Oricon also analysed that Korean Male Solo singers - Rain and se7en have gorgeous performance, bold vocals plus their cute & sexy outlook, which are their merits to get into USA market.

In addition, Oricon also questioned about their entrance "Their current music style is not competitive enough..." Taking pop singers from Latin America as example, "They should create new music styles that can distinguish them from American artists.. Also they have to improve their English language..."

Singer Rain Poses for Unfortunate Children

Pan-Asian star Rain has participated in the photo exhibition "Letter from Angels 4" organized by photographer Cho Se-hon to help children without families. In cooperation with the Social Welfare Society (SWS), the exhibition has been held since 2003 to help children living in social facilities find a new home and lead a healthy life.

Rain accepted a direct request for participation by Cho without hesitation despite his busy schedule, saying "I will be happy if I can help even one child find a new loving family". He posed with a one-month old baby boy, who perplexed the star near the end of the photographing by urinating on him.

The exhibition will be held at the Insa Art Center in Seoul from Dec. 20 until 26. Other participating stars include actresses Kim Jeong-eun, who is a SWS promotion ambassador, Kim Hye-soo, Son Ye-jin and group SG Wannabe.

Singer Rain, drilling a hole in his skull for double-eyelids?

03 Nov 06, Innolife.com
Kr to Ch: irbi@biwithrain
Ch to Eng: rayndrop

Singer Rain (original name: Jeong Jihoon) discloses his inferior complex about his single eyelids.

While participating in MBC TV's "Come and Play", Rain said, "I went to a plastic surgeon because of my eyes. But I was told that the structure of my eyes don't allow me to do the double eyelid operation"

"It's not because I have no fats in my lids, but because my eyes were protruding, giving them a weird, swollen appearance. They will be difficult to operate on. If I want to have my operation done, I'll need to cut a hole in my skull and withdraw my protuding eyes a little. That will be insanely expensive. Rain, who has the body of a westerner if not counting his single eyelids, decided to go for plastic surgery because JY Park said his eyes were lifeless onstage.

Kim Tae Woo, who was in the show with him, consoled Rain saying, "At least he wanted Rain to go for operation. He had one look at my eyes and immediately asked me to put on my glasses." Then, he looked into the camera and said to JY Park, "We're all under the same agency. Why are some people asked to go for operations while others are asked to put on glasses?"

After that, he added, "When Rain was making his debut, g.o.d's popularity was at its peak and made some big bucks. The agency's financial situation became better because of that. So they took the money g.o.d made and gave it to Rain for double eyelid surgery." That comment elicited a round of laughter from the audiences.

Rain said, "In comparison to women, I still like food better!"

"This is the result of Park So-and-So (JY Park)'s strict training and starving of the trainees! In particular, singers under that agency share a common trait--If they look down or unhappy, simply offer them some food and they immediately cheer up and start laughing again."

This programme which Rain and Kim Tae Woo appeared in will be broadcasted on SBS on 3rd November at 9.55pm (Korea time).

K-Pop Won Over Asia: Can It Win Over US?

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia
Staff Reporter

Rain, who is with JYP Entertainment, will advance to the U.S. market next year.

Music knows no boundaries. Even language is not a hindrance. Nowhere is this more apparent than the K-pop explosion throughout Asia.

K-pop music is already becoming one of Korea's top cultural exports to other Asian countries. Pop stars like Boa, Rain, Se7en, TVXQ and Shinhwa are overcoming the language barrier with their music, even drawing thousands of fans to their concerts in China, Japan and Southeast Asia.

Encouraged by K-pop's massive crossover success in Asia, Korean entertainment companies are making a big push in perhaps the world's biggest and most important market – the U.S.

In an unprecedented move, two of Korea's top entertainment companies JYP Entertainment and YG Entertainment are set to launch their most popular male singers, Rain and Se7en in the U.S. market next year.

Both singers have earned comparisons to superstars such as Justin Timberlake and Usher. They have already proven their popularity in Asia.

On Oct. 13, a preview of Rain's world tour concert attracted some 40,000 fans, with a fourth of the fans coming from all over Asia. Se7en has also performed in sold-out concerts in Japan, and was undeniably the star attraction of the recent YG 10th Anniversary concert tour in the U.S. earlier this month.

Both stars have talent, but it is a big question whether they have what it takes to Make It Big in the U.S.

Se7en, who is with YG Entertainment, will also target the U.S. market next year.
American Dream

K-pop music nowadays is already heavily influenced by American hip-hop and R&B.

During a press conference in New York on Oct. 16, Se7en announced his plan to debut in the U.S. next spring. He said he wanted to be known not just as a Korean singer but as an R&B singer in the U.S.

"I'm so fond of R&B and hip-hop. The U.S. is the mainland of R&B and hip-hop, I want to start a career here, a new beginning starting next year", he said.

YG Entertainment, Se7en's agency, is working with American music executive Mark Shimmel and producer Rick Harrison. Shimmel, who now heads Mark Shimmel Music, is a former CEO of LaFace Records and has produced records for Usher. Harrison, who will produce Se7en's first single in the U.S., has worked with stars such as Beyonce, Janet Jackson and Alicia Keys.

In a message on the company's Web site, YG Entertainment president Yang Hyun-suk said it was good to have a chance to establish good partners and enter the American market.

"Honestly, compared to the fact that we have obtained the chance to debut in America, the thing that makes us more happy is that Se7en has received recognition from the best of the American music industry… Se7en met Shimmel for the first time and he told Se7en that it seems everything will turn out fine", Yang said.

Rain is also in the middle of his preparations for his U.S. debut. He already has a head start, with a highly successful concert at New York's Madison Square Garden last February, and being named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential people in the world.

Add the fact that Rain's street credibility boosted by the support of influential hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, who appeared during the February concert. JYP Entertainment CEO Park Jin-young has already laid down the foundation, establishing connections with the hip-hop industry.

However, reviews of Rain's sold-out concerts were lukewarm. The New York Times said the Rain concert "sounded like a nostalgia act", adding his music was reminiscent of 80's American pop music.

Also, tickets to the recent YG Family 10th Anniversary concerts in New York, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. were not completely sold out, according to some fans who attended the concerts.

Asian American Fan Base

The K-pop music industry is hoping to tap into the small but growing K-pop fan base in the U.S. Fans are mostly composed of Asian Americans, so the true crossover appeal of K-pop has yet to be seen.

The Asian American population, according to the U.S. Census bureau, is 12.4 million or 4.2 percent out of 300 million. Since Asian American artists and performers do not have a major presence in the entertainment industry, most of young Asian Americans seek out Asian pop culture.

On the Internet, there are hundreds of Web sites and forums devoted to K-pop, bringing together fans from around the world who share their common passion for the music and idols. Even without understanding Korean, these fans are impressed with the quality of K-pop music.

Excluding the Korean-American population, it is not clear how established the K-pop fan base is among other Asian Americans 'in the U.S. Even the fans are divided whether K-pop can actually make it in the highly competitive U.S. market.

In e-mail interviews with The Korea Times, several fans in the U.S. said they are supportive of K-pop stars' plans to break in the U.S. market.

Maree Yang, a student living in Los Angeles, said fans are hopeful stars like Rain and Se7en would become successful.

"I believe that if K-pop artists don't give it a chance to break into the U.S. market, they'll never know how successful they can be in this market. There will be a lot of competition, but it's worth trying… I believe if they come out with the right material, I'm sure their fans will support them", she said.

Another fan, Monica Galang, who lives in California, said K-pop artists should be able to show the American market that Asian pop music is also good. "This will give opportunities for Americans to learn not just about Korean culture but Asian culture. Its a good way to show that other music is just as good", Galang said.

On the other hand, some fans believe the American mainstream market is not ready for Asian entertainers. Fans emphasized K-pop artists should come out with hip, quality music, as well as speak good English to be accepted by the American market.

K-pop stars can take some advice from Latin American stars such as Ricky Martin and Shakira, who have successfully managed to crossover to the American mainstream market. Both Martin and Shakira were already superstars in Latin America, before releasing English-language albums in the U.S.

Chor Moua, a fan who has attended several K-pop concerts in the U.S., said K-pop artists have to work on improving their English-speaking skills to make it in the U.S.

"As long as they can carry a conversation, they should be fine, a little accent here and there is still good. Look at what Shakira and other Latin singers are doing. The crossover is very hard but with determination and hard work, Asian artists will be just as successful", Moua said.

Rain Storms Coming to Las Vegas This Christmas

K-pop superstar Rain hopes to take Las Vegas by storm this Christmas season. He will be appearing at the Coliseum at Caesars Palace as part of his quest to make inroads into the North American market.

The decision to stage the concert at the 3,800-seat venue is understood to have been made at Rain's insistence. Of the many places that U.S. entertainment firms offered to the artist, it was where both Celine Dion and Elton John played that Rain thought he should kick things off.

After the opener in Vegas, Rain's world tour will span 35 performances. This time the artist has taken on some of the world's top concert producing talent for this make-or-break tour, including stage director Jaime King, lighting specialist Roy Bennett, and visual director Dago Gonzalez. Online reservations at Ticketmaster ( Open the link ) have already begun. Seats range from US$98-$260.

To get his blood pumping for his assault on the U.S. mainland, Rain will warm up to the always-affectionate home crowd with a serious of concerts Dec.15, 16 at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul.
