Rain Storms MTV World With Exclusive Performance

03.09.2006 11:18 AM EST

Though he's already a household name all over Asia, Rain is setting his sights on a bigger prize: becoming a crossover star in the U.S.

He's on his way, selling out the arena at Madison Square Garden while also packing MTV's studios and filling the streets of Times Square with screaming fans at an exclusive performance for MTV World. There's no doubt that his fans are passionate about him, but Bi, as he's sometimes called, is also receiving major props from major stars here in the U.S.

Diddy calls Rain "one of the biggest artists out there." Diddy also announced that Rain will become the first Asian model for his Sean Jean clothing line.

R&B singer Omarion is also throwing his star-power behind Rain. "I notice it, I see it and I know it," he gushed. "I see this brother's a star." Omarion has also hinted at a future collaboration, saying "you guys will see a lot from us."

Much of Rain's fame is due to his South Korean producer, JY Park -- a star in his own right, who has also produced tracks for the likes of Mase, Will Smith and Outkast. Park is also producing Rain's forthcoming English-language album, which he promises "will make people move."

Luck may be on his side, but winning favor with Western audiences -- which at times have compared him unfavorably with Usher or Justin Timberlake -- may prove difficult for the pop star. While Rain admits some anxiety, the ever-confident JY Park says Bi's success will help to bridge the gap between East and West. "Both cultures can really benefit from learning the other culture," he said. "If people like Omarion and Rain can support the movement to really learning and respecting other cultures -- that's all we need."

Don't miss Rain's exclusive MTV World performance, airing Friday, March 17 9 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. PT on MTV Chi. The performance will also air on yet-to-be launched MTV K, a channel that will give a home to Korean artists like Rain. Look for more on MTV K coming soon.
