'Rain' Fever, the export formula
JYP Entertainment, Ltd or JYPE is a big entertainment business company in Korea, as the home label of "Rain" came back again with a bigger project, "Rainy Day In Bangkok 2006" concert. Now it's become one of the hits among Korean's culture exports.
Jimmy Jeong, the director of new business development of JYPE, gave views as a 100% Korean businessman that the Korean entertainment business has come to a peak success like never before. Korean producers, both in the movie and drama fields now concentrate on stories about family, relationships among people, and the most important things, they invest big budgets on the productions and export their works to ASEAN countries.
"We brought "Rain" to Thailand for the first time 3 years ago. At that time we didn't think that later we would be able to do such a big project in Thailand because Thailand is so far away from Korea as compared to Hong Kong, and Japan which is nearer. So, last 3 years we didn't give much expectation. We didn't know much about the Thai market whether how large it is.
At that time, we came here to film the Korean series "Full House" in Phuket. We only felt impressed with Thailand in its culture and people.
As for now, we've known that the Thai market is very interesting and is one big market. This is proven by the success of our artists' promotion tours with the helpful collaborations of Thai music companies, RS promotions and GMM Grammy.
Another example of the success of the Korean entertainment business, Jimmy refered to the movie, "The Promise" , in Thai title "Kon Ma Bin", which also a 'collaboration' among countries, which should be the resolves of problems now.
"The Promise", produced by 4 different countries, including Japan, America, China and Korea, is a project that can sell in several countries, not just Korea. Another example is "Full House" which is also a collaboration between Korean producers and GGB company of Taiwan.
The success of Korean entertainment business results from the well-preparation since the pre-production process. The Korean government and the production crews have to make it all ready before starting.
As receiving the successful feedbacks, now the Korean entertainment business investers like to expand its targets abroad, not only for the Korean audiences.
"At the present, we create projects in several countries in the area, for example, when we work on dramas or music, we'll try to compensate with the overseas customers' needs as well. We prepare for the international markets, for China, do like that, for Japan, do like this...etc. Also our new targets like India and Vietnam, we will have to think how to make it exportable. When we collaborate with foreign countries, we have to think of what Asians like or what the consumers need. That's why the successfull Korean movies or dramas like Full House, and even Dae Jang Geum, was made from the collected information about the basic storylines that Asians like which is love and normal Asian sterotype.
The confident entertainment businessman, Jimmy, also confronted that Korean entertainment exports will continue to grow, and that'll do in Thailand as well because JYPE also tries to collaborate with the Thai music company for the continuous development together. Now that it's not only JYPE bring Korean artists to do promotions here but also plans to look for Thai native artists to train with JYPE in Korea because Korea knows that if they can successfully break into the Thai market means the open door to the markets in ASEAN as well.
