"이제 갓 우물을 빠져나온 개구리 같아요. 이제 시냇물로 가느냐, 바다로 가느냐가 남은 것 같습니다." 미국의 시사주간지 타임으로부터 세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 100인(이하 타임100)에 선정된 비가 자신을 '이제 갓 우물을 빠져나온 개구리'에 비유하며 앞으로의 행보가 더 중요하다고 말했다.
“I am like a frog that is just out of the well. Now, I am as if left with whether I should go to the stream or whether I should go to the sea.” Chosen by Time, America’s magazine of contemporary topics as one of world’s most influential 100 people (hereafter, Time’s 100), Rain emphasized more importance of his future from now on, likening himself to a ‘frog just out of the well.’

비는 1일 오후 스타뉴스와의 전화 인터뷰에서 "뿌듯하기도 하고 설레기도 하다"며 타임100 선정 소감을 밝히고 "이제부터 시작이니까 더욱 열심히 하겠다"고 각오를 다졌다. In a phone interview with the Star News in the afternoon 1st of July, Rain said his impression of being chosen as one of Time’s 100, in his determination “Now that it’s the beginning for me, I shall keep the more good work.”

다음은 비와의 일문일답.
The following are the answers for each question:

- 한국 연예인 사상 처음으로 타임100에 올랐는데, 소감은.
You are up on the time 100 for the first time in Korea’s entertainment history. What is your impression?

▶ 나도 (소식을 듣고)깜짝 놀랐다. 너무 뜻 깊다. 한국의 많은 팬 여러분과 많은 관계자들이 도와주신 덕택이다. 처음에 어머니 생각이 많이 났고, 또 아무것도 없을 당시 (박)진영이 형이 (오디션에서)뽑아주셔서 여기까지 왔다.
I was surprised (to hear the news), too. It is so meaningful. I attribute many thanks to so many fans and the persons concerned within Korea and without. At first, my mother came to the mind. It is because of my Senior Jinyoung Park having chosen me in an audition that I am up to here, at the time when I had nothing in hand.

소속사(JYP 엔터테인먼트) 관계자들로 인해 여기까지 와서 식구들에게 먼저 감사드린다. (미국진출)시작이 너무 좋아서 뿌듯하기도 하고 설레기도 하다. 지금부터 시작이니까 열심히 한다는 생각이다.
I first thank the family of mine for my being up to here, the people of JYP entertainment which I belong to and helped me on. The advance to America has been so nice that I feel a lump in the throat and my heart throbbing. Now that it’s beginning from now on, I promise myself I shall do my best.

- 지난 2월 미국 뉴욕공연과 '타임100' 선정의 기분이 다를 텐데.
I wonder any difference between as a performer in New York February and as a person of ‘Time’s 100.’

▶ 그 때도 좋았지만 지금도 너무 좋다. 타임100은 연예인뿐만 아니라 세계의 정치가들, 기업가들과 함께 선정돼 영광스럽다.
I felt great at the time, and now so do I. I feel much honored to be picked out along with world-famous politicians and entrepreneurs as well as entertainers.

- 타임으로부터 어떤 점을 높이 평가받았다고 생각하는가.
What points do you think the Time more highly appreciated you?

▶ 지난해 아시아 투어를 하면서 아시아에서는 영향력을 좀 얻었다. 미국에는 아시아 인구가 약 1500만으로 알고 있는데, 아시아에서 큰 영향력이 있고, 이런 아시아계들을 바탕으로 멀리 미국까지 영향력이 있다고 봐준 것 같다.
Through tour in Asia last year, I received the influence in Asia. As I know, Asian population in America is about 15 million. So the influence of Asian-Americans has been conducive to such influence in as far as America. This might have been what they took for reference.

미국에서 또 음반을 낸다고 하니까 더 큰 영향력을 얻을 수 있다고 판단한 것 같다. 인터넷 투표에서 리안 감독과 각축을 벌이는 것을 보면서 이제는 미국이 아시아 문화에 개방적이며, 아시아 문화가 선두가 될 것임을 암시하고 있는 것 같다. 잘 해야겠다는 생각이 더욱 든다.
And to hear the news I would put out an album in America, they might have interpreted Rain would have more influence in the future. In Internet poll, I saw there being keen competition between me and film director Ang Lee. In a sense, it seems to be an indication that America is getting more open-minded to the Asian culture, and that Asian culture might be the front. I think I should be working harder.

- 가족과 주위에서도 많이 기뻐했을 것 같다.
I guess your family and the neighbors would have been very glad.

▶ 아버지께서 무척 기뻐하셨다. 명예가 중요한 것이니 앞으로 절대 욕심 부리지 말고 더욱 잘 하라고 말씀하셨다. 나도 이런 상 준다고 해서 어깨가 으쓱하지도 않고 사실은 오히려 더 무섭다.
My father was very glad. He said, honor is important, so don’t be ever greedy and keep better moving on. For this award, I don’t fancy myself with a shrug of my shoulders. Rather, I feel afraid.

- 미국진출에 자신 있나.
Are you confident in successful advance in America?

▶ 이제까지 비가 어떤 행보를 걸어왔는지를 보여줬다. 아직도 신인의 자세라, 갈 수 있는 길이 더 있어 행복하다.
Up till now, Rain has shown what path to have been along. With attitude of a still new face, I am happy there is more path to move on yet in front of me.

아시아에서는 '비'라는 이름을 많이 알린 것 같지만 아직 아시아에서 내가 최고다 할 수 없다. 나아갈 곳은 미국이다. 미국이나 중국계 언론들은 이제 비도 타임100인에 선정됐으니 내년에 진출해서 뜻 깊은 일을 하지 않을까 전망하고 있는 것 같다. 이런 것에서 설레고 자신감도 생기지만 한편으로 두렵기도 하다.
I might have had the name ‘Rain’ widely known in Asia, but I am not yet the top in Asia. The way to go is America. The press of the U.S and China seems to prospect about me that, now that Rain is one of Time’s 100, he might be making some meaningful achievement in the advance of next year. From this news, I feel my heart throbbing and have confidence, whereas I am afraid.

처음에는 4년 전 4월28일인가? '쇼 뮤직탱크'(당시 KMTV 음악프로그램)에 처음 출연했던 일이 기억났다. 그 때는 단 한번만이라도 1위를 해서 트로피 받아보는 게 소원이었는데, 이제 우물 안에서 갓 빠져나온 개구리 같다. 이제 시냇물로 가느냐, 바다로 가느냐가 문제다.
April 28th or so 4 years ago, I appeared for the first time in the ‘Show Music Tank’(KMTV music program at the time), which I remember. The best wish at the time was, to won a first prize trophy in my hand even if it might be a single occasion. Now guess I feel just out of the well. Now, it is whether I make for the stream or whether for the sea that has me left with.

- 이번 타임100 선정이 미국 진출에 큰 도움이 될 것 같은데.
I suppose your being chosen as Time’s 100 should help the advance to the U.S.

▶ 도움이 될 정도가 아니라 굉장히 이슈인 것 같다. 미국에서도 어떤 목표를 갖고 어떻게 네트워크를 형성했기에 카니에 웨스트, 조지 클루니 같은 사람보다 인터넷 투표에서 우위에 있나 궁금해 한다. 많이 놀란 것 같더라. 타임100 파티에서 많은 유명 인사들을 만나보는 좋은 기회가 생긴 것 같다.
Beyond just help, it looks like having been a big issue. In fact, America wonders how come he is preferred to such as Kanye West and George Clooney in the Internet poll because of what network Rain has. They looked much amazed at the news. I think I shall be having a good opportunity to meet many celebrities on the party of Time’s 100.

- 미국 음반은 예정대로 9월 나오나.
Is the album in the U.S. scheduled for September?

▶ 올해는 어려울 것 같다. 미국에서 음반을 내면 6, 7개월 정도 활동을 해야 하는데, 올 연말부터 내년 중반까지 아시아 투어가 예정돼 있다. 미국 음반은 그 이후에 낼 수 있을 것 같다.
I guess it will be impossible. If I were to release an album, I should have to have activities for 6~7 months or so. Asia tour, however, is scheduled for from the end of the year till the middle of next year. Accordingly, an album in America might not be coming out until after that.

- 미셸 위도 함께 올랐다. 혹시 만난 적 있나.
Michelle Wie is also up on the list. Did you ever meet her?

▶ 한번도 만난 적이 없지만, 한국인이 같이 있다는 것이 자랑스럽다.
I never did, but I am proud of her being of a Korean lineage.

- 영어공부는 잘하고 있나.
Are you making any progress with your English study?

▶ 연말에는 영어도 좀 되지 않을까 생각한다. 지금은 영화촬영으로 인해 개인교습은 못하고 있지만 영화촬영이 끝나면 다시 할 예정이다.
In the year end, I guess I might see myself advancing. At the present, I don’t have many a chance for a lesson because of engaging in a movie. But with filming of the movie over, I expect I shall have a retry of it.

- 첫 영화 촬영은 어떤가.
How is the shooting of the first movie you take part in?

▶영화촬영이 재미있다. 특히 영화를 진두지휘하는 사람이 박찬욱 감독이어서 좋고, 굉장히 재미있는 영화가 나올 것 같다. 첫 영화를 박찬욱 감독과 하게 돼서 재미있고 감사하다.
Engaging in the filming is fun. Especially, I am happy working with director Chanwook Park who takes the lead in the movie. I expect it will come out as a good one. I am interested and grateful for working my first movie with director Chanwook Park.

- 올해 세웠던 목표가 있다면.
What is it, if there is any objective you set for this year?

▶ 올해 목표는 '진짜 남들처럼 한번 살아보자'였다. 여자친구도 만나고 주위 사람과 어울려 맛있는 것도 먹고 싶었다. 남들처럼 여행도 몇 달 다녀오고, 어디 가서 레포츠도 즐기고 해보고 싶었다. 그러나 올해도 안되겠다. 벌써 내년 하반기까지 일정이 다 잡혀있다.
The objective for this year was ‘Let’s live like other common people for once.’ I wished to meet a girlfriend. I wished to have a delicious meal together with neighbors. I wished to go on a few months of journey like others. And I wished to have fun having leports at somewhere. However, there is no chance this year as well, because I already have a full schedule until the latter-half of next year.

- 마지막으로 팬들에게 한마디.
Lastly, what is it, if there is one word toward your fans.

▶ 여기까지 오게 된 것은 모두 구름팬 덕분이다. 특히 어머님들의 응원에 감사드린다.
