Korean pop star Bi to rock New York city


The Korean pop star Bi (Rain), who has been sweeping many countries across Asia, including Japan, China, and Hong Kong, is about to make performances in the United States on Feb.2-3, 2006.

The Korean popular singer will make his debut in the U.S. by performing his solo concerts at the theater at the Madison Square Garden (MSG) in New York City on Feb. 2(Thursday) and Feb.3(Friday).

The theater at the Madison Square Garden in New York City is well known to people as "the world's most renowned arena". Bi's concerts to be held in the U.S. suggest that he has become an international pop star whose stage extends far beyond Asia.

Introducing his concerts on its official homepage, the MGS highly praised Bi for his excellent music performances, saying that his popularity rising to international superstar status, Bi is Asia's prominent musical talent.

"Not only can he sing and dance, he is a highly accomplished actor starring in several hit-movies in Korea", the MSG added.

American singers, including Will Smith, Mase, Lil' Kim, 3LW, Tyrese, will likely join the Bi's first American music performances at the MSG theater in the U.S, according to Park Jin-young, who heads the JYP entertainment to which Bi belongs. Bi got acquainted with Tyrese Gibson and 3LW in the beginning of last year, Park explained.

Meanwhile, the New York Times, one of the U.S. prestigious newspapers made a coverage on the Korean singer Bi at the Jan.29 edition. The American journalist Deborah Sontag wrote a lengthy article on BI at the New York Times Jan.29 edition.

At the article, with respect to BI, Songtag reported, "At 23, Bi(Rain), who has been labeled the Korean Justin Timberlake and the Korean Usher, is a serious and driven performer (with washboard abs, winsome looks and a Gene Kelly-like ability to leap through puddles wile performing his hit song, "It's Raining".)

Nusrat Durrani, senior vice president and general manger of MTV World, was quoted in the Sontag's article as saying, " In Bi, Asians might see the spirit of Usher or Timberlake or even Michael Jackson, but he makes the music theirs".

Durrani stressed that Bi is a huge star in the making, but, at the same time, he is a very indigenious artist and a source of local pride.

Bi grabbed the "Most Popular Korean Singer Award" from the 2005 MTV Asia Aid in Thailand. He also received the "Best Buzz Asia from Korea Award" during the MTV Japan Video Music Awards 2005. in Beijing, Bi won the "Best Korean Singer Award" in the MTV-CCTV Mandarin Music Honors.

Last September, the Asia Times reported that Bi is the very first Korean pop star who will be able to make inroads into the U.S. market in the near future. Harry Hui, the Asia-Pacific President Universal Music Group was quoted as saying that Bi is worth to be the first asian artist that I could definitely introduce proudly to the U.S market.

Bi has been recognized as the first Korean singer who wrapped up an all-East Asia tour. During his East Asian tour, Bi has set new records with audience of over 100,000 people in less than a dozen concerts.
